In 1983, Bishop DeGoesbriand successfully petition Pope Leo XIII to grant a metal link from "the chains of Saint Peter" to the Diocese of Burlington. A major public venertion occured in Burlnigton on August 1st, 1893, the former Memorial of the Chains of St. Peter, with consecration of the Dicoese of Burlington to Saint Peter. A public veneration was also made on August 5, 1984, when Bishop DeGoesbrand "translated" the relic to a new reliquary altar piece. Keeping with the plan of Bishop DeGoesbriand, several times a year the relic of the chains is presented for public veneration, and prayers.

The  Cause for Bishop DeGoesbriand's Canonization

In 2019 the Diocese of Burlington announced its intention to open the "cause for canonization" of bishop Louis DeGoesbriand. As the first bishop of Vermont, he served the local Church from the time of the Diocese's establishment in 1853, until his death in 1890.
